Not a particularly good picture, but the only one of me with the kids. At around this stage a couple of women in chador-type clothing came up to us. I thought they must have been the mothers of a couple of the kids, and were going to tell us off or something, not least as the older girl who liked posing put her arms around me at one stage.

Of course not! They wanted to say hello too, and wanted to take pictures of *us* with their mobile phone cameras. I'm not sure if they were locals or not - they were dressed more like Iranians than Syrians - but wherever they were from, they were incredibly friendly. Emma and I felt like celebrities!

I eventually had to call an end to the carnival, as my CF card was filling up, and we would have ended up in the Mosque until it closed, had we not extricated ourselves. During our walk out of the Mosque, we had about 10 of the kids trailing behind us waving and saying goodbye to us. All very joyful, humbling and fun.

Heart of an Orphan

Aaand after a month, I am finally back from Africa.

Zambia has been called the cradle of the orphan crisis. Of the 10 million people that populate Zambia, 2 million are AIDS orphans that are left to fend for themselves and their siblings alone.

And we went—70 North American teenagers and young adults—to go and change the lives we could. We held a camp with 300 orphans: clothing them, feeding them, giving them a place to live. The thought of "white celebrities" coming to hug and play with them brought tears to their eyes.

We loved children that never felt what it is like to be loved.

My goal, is simply to attempt to give you the slightest taste of what we saw. The hearts that broke. The tears we shed. My goal is to give all of you a look into Zambia—a glimpse into the Heart of an Orphan.
