More than 300 glitter-covered Columbus yelpers came out to Yelp's Glam Jam at COSI to sample an awing spread of food from 11 local food vendors and imbibe with the help of three booze sponsors. Upon arrival, many made pit stops at the two glam stations offering mini services while others made a b line to the two photobooths that captured celebrity-style ring lights (a certain style of portrait) and group shots of everyone wearing their glitziest garb. Easily the true star of the party, Columbus's most popular drag queen, Nina West, performed two numbers complete with backup dancers. More than 0 and dozens of much-needed items were donated to charity partner, Dress for Success Columbus, making Yelp Columbus's first open party a drop-dead, five-star night to remember.

I have mixed feelings about this place, I am at the same time both sad and glad that the scientologists took over this place. I am not a fan of theirs but they did save it from destruction and I love this place. As I grew up the place decayed in a sort of elegant manner and ended up slipping into a Southern style melancholy. So I guess it was for the best.

Alex Perry launches new designer eyewear range at Marble Bar, Hilton Hotel Sydney

Earlier this evening Australian fashion designer Alex Perry revealed his new designer eyewear range, the Alex Perry 2012 Collection for Specsavers.

It all took place at the super fashionable, Victorian styled event at Sydney’s famous Marble Bar.

The event featured a glamorous runway show inspired by the romance of 19th century Europe, where Alex Perry models delved into a darker, sultrier fashion inspiration that turned heads.

Amidst the decadent and seductive backdrop of Sydney’s Marble Bar there was feminine touches of the Victorian era for the lucky few to see, from which Alex has drawn inspiration to create the dramatic and powerful eyewear range.

Guests who stayed the night got to see the new Specsavers limited edition striking red frame revealed.

Models and fashion elite present included Alex Perry, Sarah Murdoch, Charlotte Dawson, and Kerri-Anne Kennerley.

Well done to everyone associated with the success of the launch.

Famous for his portraits of celebrities like Kate Moss and Kylie, renowned photographer Rankin has joined forces with Oxfam Ireland to bring the faces of those caught up in the war zones of the Democratic Republic of Congo to Dublin.

Starting April 30th and running until July 31 st at Wolf Tone Park (beside the Jervis Street shopping centre, Rankin's exhibition – sponsored by Irish Aid, the Government's overseas aid programme and supported by Dublin City Council – sees his celebrity portraiture being used with entirely different subjects – the residents of Mugunga camp, home to over 250,000 people displaced by Congo's harrowing violence.

Photographed against Rankin's trademark white backdrop rather than in their everyday surroundings, those in the portraits boldly defy the war victim tag and shine out as real people with individuality, humour and warmth. Jasmine, a young girl, mimics Rankin with her own camera made from a tin can; Tumani a tailor, smiles broadly as she balances her sewing machine on her head; and Marina, a grandmother, stands proudly with her grandchildren by her side.

The exhibition's name Cheka Kidogo, meaning “laugh a little” in Swahili, celebrates the spirit of the Congolese people in the face of adversity, but was also the phrase that people called out to their friends being photographed. The exhibition will move on to Belfast after its showing in Dublin .

Rankin said:

“I think we have become anesthetised to traditional photographs of conflict victims. By taking my celebrity portraiture style of photography and applying it to the survivors in the camps in Congo I have tried to get beyond the statistics and show the human side of the conflict.

“It is crazy that we hear nothing about the Democratic Republic of Congo. The level of suffering there is horrendous, but it hardly makes the news. I heard awful stories of young girls being raped and people fleeing attacks on their villages. Despite the suffering that they have been through the people of Congo are just like us and need our help. I hope the exhibition will wake people up to what is going on.”

The scale of Congo 's suffering defies belief. Since 1998, the country has lost 5.4 million people to conflict, and the deadly disease and hunger that it has unleashed. Over a million people are displaced in the eastern part of the country, with over 500,000 people having fled from violence in the last year alone. Rape is epidemic. This year more than 1,100 women a month have reported being raped, although the real figure is likely to be much higher.

Speaking about his experience in the Congo , Rankin said:

“I felt energised by the strength of the people and their will to survive and to make their lives better. Yet they all have these really awful stories. They have all seen their brothers and sisters, wives, husbands, daughters or sons killed in front of them, and you can see it in their eyes.”

Jim Clarken Oxfam Ireland 's Chief Executive who has just returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo said “ I know first hand the devastation this forgotten emergency is having on the people there, and know the importance of continued support for this region."

Oxfam Ireland is very proud to host the exhibition and hopes it will raise awareness of the crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Oxfam's ongoing work in camps for millions of displaced people. To make a donation to Oxfam Ireland 's DRC appeal, please go to www.oxfamireland.org, text DRC to 51500 (standard text rate applies) or call 1850 30 40 55 (ROI) and 0800 0 30 40 55 (NI)

Authentic American cultural art and inconography! Probably the biggest on-going sale of the myth (or real thing) of the American West that has EVER HAPPENED. imo. Best branding, best advertising campaign EVER.

See MotherPie's The Marlboro Man... where I was the flowergirl ONCE UPON A TIME.... Long Ago.

This is the basis for one of Richard Prince's iconic art pieces, a good example of Marlboro Man appropriations.

the earlier appropriation work of Prince on Brook Shields sparked lots of controversy when Prince first appropriated it. iconicphotos.wordpress.com/2009/06/05/brooke-shields-by-g...

Then only two years ago Prince's Brook Shield's work was taken down from London's Tate Modern exhibit. www.nj.com/entertainment/celebrities/index.ssf/2009/10/br...

I think this piece below from 2007's record breaking work provides more information about Prince.

PRINCE'S WORK PULLING IN AUCTION RECORDS:

Prince's works fetch millions. For example, this Prince photograph, one of two, called "Untitled Cowboy" 2001-2002 piece brought .2 million at auction at Sotheby's in 2007. here is the link: www.brianappelart.com/art_writing_richard_prince_stealing...

You can look Prince up in Wickipedia. Here's a brief exerpt:

Prince's series known as the Cowboys, produced from 1980 to 1992, and ongoing, is his most famous group of rephotographs. Taken from Marlboro cigarette advertisements of the Marlboro Man, they represent an idealized figure of American masculinity. The Marlboro Man was the iconic equivalent of later brands like Ralph Lauren, which used the polo pony image to identify and associate its brand. "Every week. I'd see one and be like, Oh that's mine, Thank you," Prince stated in an interview.[10]

Prince's Cowboys displayed men in boots and ten-gallon hats, with horses, lassos, spurs and all the fixings that make up the stereotypical image of a cowboy. They were set in the Western U.S., in arid landscapes with stone outcrops flanked by cacti and tumbleweeds, with backdrops of sunsets. The advertisements were staged with the utmost attention to detail.

It has been suggested that his works raise the question of what is real, what is a real cowboy, and what makes it so. Prince's photographs of these advertisements attempt to prompt one to decide how real are media images.

The subjects of Prince's rephotographs are the photos of others. He is photographing the works of other photographers, who in the case of the cowboys, had been hired by Marlboro to create images depicting cowboys. Prince described his process in a 2003 interview by Steve Lafreiniere in Artforum. "I had limited technical skills regarding the camera. Actually I had no skills. I played the camera. I used a cheap commercial lab to blow up the pictures. I made editions of two. I never went into a darkroom."[11]
